Orígenes No se tiene constancia exacta del momento en que surgió como raza perfectamente diferenciada de las dos que se cruzaron para su creación, la francesa Bretona, con yeguas de diversas razas españolas, particularmente las del norte montañoso de la península Ibérica (Cordillera Cantábrica, Pirineos, Montes Vascos), que ha sido fundamentalmente su hábitat hasta hoy en día.
